mSpace Mobile

mSpace Mobile

Bringing you physical, temporal, virtual worlds to the palm of your hand

Click on image to see video of mSpace mobile running on a PDA.
Alternately, you can also choose a 5 min (23meg) overview video demonstrating mspace mobile, and describing its features.

Don't try this at home

What Japenese restaurants are near a cinema showing a film i want to see?
A regular search engine - even one with maps - will mean you have to manage several separate queries with several separate maps and pages: find cinema listsings; see what's showing at each; try to remember where they are. Then look for restaurants featuring your chosen cuisine; see where they are located; try to bring the maps together to see if they're near each other. Then go look for recommendations or menus about the restaurant.

mSpace mobile lets you explore information in more natural ways -
exploring context, association, and relations

mSpace mobile makes it easy - and keeps everything in view. mSpace mobile's innovative interface lets you explore dozens of areas of interest while keeping your original query/quary in sight. So you can find where a movie's playing relative to where you're standing right now, and see just how close or not restaurants are that suit your taste. And it you're curious, you can just as easily head off to explore information about different kinds of cuisine, or the biography of an actor in that film you're seeing, all without leaving your initial context. And mspace makes it easy to keep track of what you've discovered, too: see easily that your movie starts at 7:10; that you're catching the 11pm train home, and so on.

Awards

Timeline and Milestones

mSpace mobile is in final prototyping stages. Over the next quarater we plan to develop a version of the software to work on smaller screened smart phones. We will also be producing online forums to make it easier for folks to tag things of interest from desktop mSpaces, rate them, comment on them, and have these connect with mSpace mobile. Look for an early 2006 release for multiple devices.

Mobile TV as Eagerly Waited VAS

The time is very exciting for mobile applications firms in India. The launch of 3G coupled with arrival of various Tablets in market has made it more appealing. Also Indian service providers have also understood that in times to come it is going to be most revenue earning Value Added Service..
However still there are not many players in market providing the solution. There is handful of players only. Now the biggest issue in India is there is no standardization in terms of platform. We have Iphone users, android users, Windows mobile ,Blackberry , Symbian but still the major chunk of population have other mobile handsets with low costs platforms.
Now what has this to do to get mobile TV? Firstly it makes difficult for application developers to make an application that would be widely used as one application may work in one handset but not in others. Also can a low cost mobile support Mobile TV streaming over GPRS ,the answer is no. For effortlessly supporting mobile TV .firstly 3G or WIFI is must (Over GPRS/EDGE it can work but not worth watching) and secondly handset needs to support any streaming protocol. Also one can directly through compatible mobile browser watch mobile TV, but then installing an application makes it faster and more convenient.
Now to talk about mobile applications we have, Mundu TV Apalya TV, Zenga TV, Yupp TV etc.
Apalya TV,I would say them the leaders . They provide mobile TV solution to all major service providers, be it on GPRS/WiFi/3G. The Hyderabad based provide services to Airtel,BSNL,Aircel,Idea,MTNL, MTS,Reliance,Tata Docomo and others. Their application comes inbuilt in various handsets. The latest to join bandwagon is HP DREAMSCREEN which has in inbuilt Apalya application.
Mundu TV works on all major platforms. For Blackberry also they are planning to come up with an application. It has mostly Zee Channels with 18 channels total. The video quality is descent. It comes free initially with trial period and then on subscription charges of Rs49/monthly to Rs149/monthly.
Zenga TV, which I am able to find in Olive Pad only. It comes with a 6 months free subscription service, though what would be the charges then is not known. It’s a relatively better application with various option of Live TV, Reality TV and Movies .If you are reality serials fan, one can watch previous episodes of BigBoss, Splitsvilla. Also the no of channels are also more, but then I was surprised to see that this application is not in android market also.
Yupp TV, primarily having all South Indian Channels has an application for IPhone  as well as Android .The application has an Trial period of 13 days  and then offers various packages  of Tamil ,Telgu and Kannada with some Hindi channels also.
These mobile TV provide basic Mobile TV streaming, though would be great if they provide advanced features such as recording and saving it for viewing it later, include more channels and with 3G being launched means more bandwidth should give an luxury for application developers to come up with more interactive applications

Nokia Lumia 800 specifications

 Nokia Lumia 800 Review

Nokia Lumia 800 is the upcoming Windows Phone from Nokia Corporations in Indian gadget market. The handset is powered by a Microsoft Windows phone 7.5 Mango operating system which gets its power from its 1.4 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset processor with 3D Graphics HW accelerator. The processor of the phone offers a speedy web access and a provides a faster accessibility to mobile applications. The 512 MB RAM of the phone is used by CPU and called as programming memory. It has an internal storage memory of 16 GB which stores practically unlimited phone book entries, SMSs and allows user to carry huge amount of data like important files, audio and video files.

Nokia Lumia 800 features a large 3.7 inches AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. The display of the phone features a Nokia Clear Black display, multi-touch input method, proximity sensor for auto turn-off, accelerometer sensor for UI auto rotate and various touch sensitive controls. The phone from Nokia comes with an integration of an 8 mega pixel auto focus camera with Carl Zeiss lens and LED flash to captures images even in the night. The camera of the phone features a fast and non-destructive image editor and also includes a geo-tagging facility. The camera captures high quality still images and shoots high definition videos as well. The phone lacks in video calling feature as it does not support front facing camera which reduces the scope of the camera.

Nokia Lumia 800 offers a wide spread connectivity via A-GPS, WLAN, USB version 2.0 and Bluetooth. The handset sports a high speed connectivity over the GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA and HSUPA networks. For messaging freaks it comes with E-Mail and messaging features. E-mail features SMTP, IMAP4 and POP3. The phone also comes with a social networking sites integration like Facebook and also allows users to create groups which allows user to share messages and photos within the group. The WAP 2.0 and HTML browser in the phone provides a faster internet access.

Nokia Lumia 800 features a Zune Player which supports an advanced technology media player which can play wide range of audio files. The multi format video player shoots and play multiple codec video files. It also sports a stereo FM which enhances the scope of the phone. The device comes with other multimedia applications like Office applications including Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc. and various gaming applications.

Overall Review

Nokia Lumia 800 seems like a successor of earlier launched Nokia MeeGo smartphone, Nokia N9 but it is a Windows phone. It is the first impressive product of Nokia Microsoft collaboration and from Nokia in recent times. It runs the 1.4GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon/Scorpion CPU that certainly add snaps to its embedded software.
It has an excellent hardware and its all new Windows Mango opearting software is also very refreshing.Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone boasts a large 3.7-inch OLED screen, curved polycarbonate shell and what makes it even more fashionable is the top panel engineering and its 2.5 D curved glass seamlessly integrated in its body. It has a unibody design that makes battery inaccessible by top mounted flaps. It adds the much cherished slimness to the phone. The Lumia 800 is available in three colors. The black one looks more professional while the fuschia and cyan colored handsets are for those who wish to possess a young and playful handset.  It has the premium quality construction and its overall looks are enthralling. The phone weighs 142 grams and measures 116.5 mm, 61.2 mm, and 12.1 mm in length, width, and height, respectively. There are a couple of issues with Lumia too. It has no notification light and users will have to keep checking their phone for alerts. It also lacks the NFC support, which is a prominent feature in most Nokia devices, particularly its Symbian Belle devices.

User Interface and UI functionality

The 3.7" 16 M ClearBlack color AMOLED touch display of Nokia Lumia 800 is mesmerizing. The display with WVGA 800 x 400 pixels resolution is so stunning that it brings the Mango interface to life. The UI looks best in the dark theme as the live tiles really looks like jumping out from it and merging with the surface. The capacitive touch screen is also very apt for pinch to zoom, double taps and is extremely smooth to touch. There also are standby UI Windows keys integrated with the display. On the downside, Microsoft has made this UI in such a way that no customization is allowed. Yet, the UI has some features that stand out distinctly as belonging to Nokia. Running on most advanced and updated Windows Mango operating system, the Nokia Lumia 800 touch-screen smartphone also has embedded 1.4 GHz CPU processor. Though seems subdued, the processor is just fine for this operating software and the phone hardly ever slows down or needs reboot.

Multimedia features

The music features offered on a Nokia phones are quite good. Nokia Lumia 800 has Zune Music, Nokia Music (in selected markets) and supports a wide range of audio codecs like MP3/eAAC/WAV/eAAC /WMA/AMR-NB. It also has an integrated stereo FM radio.
Nokia Lumina 800 users might be pleased with their f 2.2, 8-meg camera with Carl Zeiss optics and HD recording but there's no front-facing camera on the phone. Unfortunately, Lumia 800 has also been omitted from the list of smartphones using the new leading Voip service for video calls, the Tango.

Pictures and Video quality

The primary camera of 8 mega pixels on Nokai Lumia 800 smartphone is very cool and capable. It has features like LED Flash, auto focus, and geotagging. It is also quite amusing that the camera has the ability to share clicked pictures at a single click. It can do hassle free 720p HD recording and that is of very good quality.

Internet support

One can enjoy using Internet Explorer 9 web browser with desktop rendering on Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone. Its format may be liked by some and not by others who are used to using Opera Mini browsers. However, typing is quite delightful as the keyboard is very user-friendly (unlike Symbian keyboards). Its well-spaced keys make tying faster and accurate to a great extent.
 Internal and External Memory
512 MB RAM and 16 GB of internal memory present in Nokia Lumia 800 is quite justified by industry standards. It also features SkyDrive but has no provision for memory expansion. It is unfortunate that such a costly smartphone (as per Indian standards) lacks external memory.
 Applications and Gaming
The Windows Mango 7.5 operating system now boasts of over 40,000 apps. One of the most likeable apps used on the phone is “Contacts Transfer.” It facilitates users with ability to import all the contacts from another phone over Bluetooth. It's really convenient and simple.  Another app is Nokia-specific app, the Nokia Drive. It facilitates worldwide turn-by-turn voice navigation for free. All that needs to be done is downloading the map of the area where the destination is located and then one can go to that place with help of a voice guided navigation system that is so good that it can beat car sat-navs also. Maps so displayed are very accurate and are in 2D and 3D. Another loveable app is Tune-in radio that utilizes Wi-Fi or data connection to stream live content from a bunch of global radio stations. It has many categories and subcategories but the audio quality is pretty clear.
The preloaded applications on the cool smartphone are TopApps, World Traveler, Adobe PDF reader, WebTV widgets, TuneWiki, and PC applications like Nokia Suite. There is XBOX Live Hub in the phone and users may also check for their friend's presence to play with them. There is possibility for 3D Avatar control and creation.
 Battery Backup
1450 mAh battery of Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone is just average and requires refueling every day when the users subject their device to few hours of calling along with running some apps in background with heavy data usage.
 Connectivity Offered
The connectivity offered on Nokia Lumia 800 is of high caliber as the phone offers a Bluetooth v 3.0, high-speed microUSB v 2.0, WLAN, and Flash Lite 4.0. Extensive e-mailing and messaging is also facilitated on Nokia Lumia 800 via its easy-to-use email client with attachment support for multiple protocols.  There is obviously a distinct e-mail widget for home screen on this phone. The smartphone has a unified MMS/SMS editor, threaded view for SMS, push e-mail, and instant messaging like features.

Compare

The tough competitor of Nokia Lumia 800 available in the market is HTC Titan. HTC Titan, a Windows Mango device only, is particularly a bigger challenge for the expensive Nokia device, Nokia Lumia 800 priced at approximate price of Rs. 29,999.  HTC Titan has a very large display of 4.7 inches. It is very much likeable as bigger displays give better media and Internet experience. Even the display clarity of Nokia Lumia 800 is limited to 400 x 800 pixels. The internal storage of HTC Titan and Nokia Lumia 800 is at par, both standing at 16 GB. It must also be noted that Nokia Lumia 800 is very lightweight and has a slim profile. Its physical appearance is truly a dream come true. It has sturdy polycarbonate unibody shell, smoother curves and snugly fits in hands with and without its high quality packaging. Samsung Omnia W is another Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone which is cheaper and thus offers higher value for money at price of just Rs. 21,000. It has almost similar spec list compared to Nokia Lumia 800. It has a 1.4 Ghz processor, 8GB internal memory storage, 5 mega pixel camera and a stunning 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display in a very light 116g body.

News Updates

Nokia has announced on its official site that the company has started rolling out a new software update for Lumia 800 Smartphone. This update carries quite a few new features including Internet sharing and flip-to-silence.As for flip-to-silence, well, a user need to turn their phone face down, and all incoming phone calls and alerts will be silenced. Nokia calls its users to turn their Lumia 800 into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Users can share their mobile Internet connection over Wi-Fi with up to five other mobile devices or computers, according to Nokia. These include what Nokia calls Camera Extras, which enhances the camera capabilities of the device. As Nokia looks for ways to differentiate its Smartphone from the opposition; the camera is one area it will focus on going forward. It is featured with a self timer which allows a user to capture photographs themselves. There is also a new panorama mode and a mode for taking better pictures of movement and action.
To get the update, users need to connect their phone to either a PC running the Zune software or a Mac running the Windows Phone 7 connector. When the software feature has been installed, other new features can be added via Microsoft app store Marketplace as well.
