Overall Review
Nokia Lumia 800 seems like a successor of earlier launched Nokia MeeGo smartphone, Nokia N9 but it is a Windows phone. It is the first impressive product of Nokia Microsoft collaboration and from Nokia in recent times. It runs the 1.4GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon/Scorpion CPU that certainly add snaps to its embedded software.
It has an excellent hardware and its all new Windows Mango opearting software is also very refreshing.Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone boasts a large 3.7-inch OLED screen, curved polycarbonate shell and what makes it even more fashionable is the top panel engineering and its 2.5 D curved glass seamlessly integrated in its body. It has a unibody design that makes battery inaccessible by top mounted flaps. It adds the much cherished slimness to the phone. The Lumia 800 is available in three colors. The black one looks more professional while the fuschia and cyan colored handsets are for those who wish to possess a young and playful handset. It has the premium quality construction and its overall looks are enthralling. The phone weighs 142 grams and measures 116.5 mm, 61.2 mm, and 12.1 mm in length, width, and height, respectively. There are a couple of issues with Lumia too. It has no notification light and users will have to keep checking their phone for alerts. It also lacks the NFC support, which is a prominent feature in most Nokia devices, particularly its Symbian Belle devices.
User Interface and UI functionality
The 3.7" 16 M ClearBlack color AMOLED touch display of Nokia Lumia 800 is mesmerizing. The display with WVGA 800 x 400 pixels resolution is so stunning that it brings the Mango interface to life. The UI looks best in the dark theme as the live tiles really looks like jumping out from it and merging with the surface. The capacitive touch screen is also very apt for pinch to zoom, double taps and is extremely smooth to touch. There also are standby UI Windows keys integrated with the display. On the downside, Microsoft has made this UI in such a way that no customization is allowed. Yet, the UI has some features that stand out distinctly as belonging to Nokia. Running on most advanced and updated Windows Mango operating system, the Nokia Lumia 800 touch-screen smartphone also has embedded 1.4 GHz CPU processor. Though seems subdued, the processor is just fine for this operating software and the phone hardly ever slows down or needs reboot.
Multimedia features
The music features offered on a Nokia phones are quite good. Nokia Lumia 800 has Zune Music, Nokia Music (in selected markets) and supports a wide range of audio codecs like MP3/eAAC/WAV/eAAC /WMA/AMR-NB. It also has an integrated stereo FM radio.
Nokia Lumina 800 users might be pleased with their f 2.2, 8-meg camera with Carl Zeiss optics and HD recording but there's no front-facing camera on the phone. Unfortunately, Lumia 800 has also been omitted from the list of smartphones using the new leading Voip service for video calls, the Tango.
Pictures and Video quality
The primary camera of 8 mega pixels on Nokai Lumia 800 smartphone is very cool and capable. It has features like LED Flash, auto focus, and geotagging. It is also quite amusing that the camera has the ability to share clicked pictures at a single click. It can do hassle free 720p HD recording and that is of very good quality.
Internet support
One can enjoy using Internet Explorer 9 web browser with desktop rendering on Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone. Its format may be liked by some and not by others who are used to using Opera Mini browsers. However, typing is quite delightful as the keyboard is very user-friendly (unlike Symbian keyboards). Its well-spaced keys make tying faster and accurate to a great extent.
Internal and External Memory
512 MB RAM and 16 GB of internal memory present in Nokia Lumia 800 is quite justified by industry standards. It also features SkyDrive but has no provision for memory expansion. It is unfortunate that such a costly smartphone (as per Indian standards) lacks external memory.
Applications and Gaming
The Windows Mango 7.5 operating system now boasts of over 40,000 apps. One of the most likeable apps used on the phone is “Contacts Transfer.” It facilitates users with ability to import all the contacts from another phone over Bluetooth. It's really convenient and simple. Another app is Nokia-specific app, the Nokia Drive. It facilitates worldwide turn-by-turn voice navigation for free. All that needs to be done is downloading the map of the area where the destination is located and then one can go to that place with help of a voice guided navigation system that is so good that it can beat car sat-navs also. Maps so displayed are very accurate and are in 2D and 3D. Another loveable app is Tune-in radio that utilizes Wi-Fi or data connection to stream live content from a bunch of global radio stations. It has many categories and subcategories but the audio quality is pretty clear.
The preloaded applications on the cool smartphone are TopApps, World Traveler, Adobe PDF reader, WebTV widgets, TuneWiki, and PC applications like Nokia Suite. There is XBOX Live Hub in the phone and users may also check for their friend's presence to play with them. There is possibility for 3D Avatar control and creation.
Battery Backup
1450 mAh battery of Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone is just average and requires refueling every day when the users subject their device to few hours of calling along with running some apps in background with heavy data usage.
Connectivity Offered
The connectivity offered on Nokia Lumia 800 is of high caliber as the phone offers a Bluetooth v 3.0, high-speed microUSB v 2.0, WLAN, and Flash Lite 4.0. Extensive e-mailing and messaging is also facilitated on Nokia Lumia 800 via its easy-to-use email client with attachment support for multiple protocols. There is obviously a distinct e-mail widget for home screen on this phone. The smartphone has a unified MMS/SMS editor, threaded view for SMS, push e-mail, and instant messaging like features.
Compare
The tough competitor of Nokia Lumia 800 available in the market is HTC Titan. HTC Titan, a Windows Mango device only, is particularly a bigger challenge for the expensive Nokia device, Nokia Lumia 800 priced at approximate price of Rs. 29,999. HTC Titan has a very large display of 4.7 inches. It is very much likeable as bigger displays give better media and Internet experience. Even the display clarity of Nokia Lumia 800 is limited to 400 x 800 pixels. The internal storage of HTC Titan and Nokia Lumia 800 is at par, both standing at 16 GB. It must also be noted that Nokia Lumia 800 is very lightweight and has a slim profile. Its physical appearance is truly a dream come true. It has sturdy polycarbonate unibody shell, smoother curves and snugly fits in hands with and without its high quality packaging. Samsung Omnia W is another Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone which is cheaper and thus offers higher value for money at price of just Rs. 21,000. It has almost similar spec list compared to Nokia Lumia 800. It has a 1.4 Ghz processor, 8GB internal memory storage, 5 mega pixel camera and a stunning 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display in a very light 116g body.
News Updates
Nokia has announced on its official site that the company has started rolling out a new software update for Lumia 800 Smartphone. This update carries quite a few new features including Internet sharing and flip-to-silence.As for flip-to-silence, well, a user need to turn their phone face down, and all incoming phone calls and alerts will be silenced. Nokia calls its users to turn their Lumia 800 into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Users can share their mobile Internet connection over Wi-Fi with up to five other mobile devices or computers, according to Nokia. These include what Nokia calls Camera Extras, which enhances the camera capabilities of the device. As Nokia looks for ways to differentiate its Smartphone from the opposition; the camera is one area it will focus on going forward. It is featured with a self timer which allows a user to capture photographs themselves. There is also a new panorama mode and a mode for taking better pictures of movement and action.
To get the update, users need to connect their phone to either a PC running the Zune software or a Mac running the Windows Phone 7 connector. When the software feature has been installed, other new features can be added via Microsoft app store Marketplace as well.
